Meeting of Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi with South Africa’s Deputy President Mashatile

On March 18, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi met with South Africa’s Deputy President Paul Mashatile, who visited Japan at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting, which began at 10:50 a.m. and lasted about 15 minutes, focused on strengthening bilateral ties.

Mr. Hayashi welcomed Deputy President Mashatile and his delegation, noting the significance of this year with South Africa’s G20 presidency, Japan’s hosting of TICAD 9, and the 115th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. He highlighted the increasing high-level exchanges and expanding cooperation across public and private sectors.

Deputy President Mashatile expressed gratitude for the invitation and reaffirmed his commitment to deepening collaboration in various fields.

Mr. Hayashi emphasized the importance of working together on a practical energy transition while ensuring energy security and asked for continued support to improve the business environment for Japanese companies in South Africa. In turn, Deputy President Mashatile thanked Japan for its contributions, particularly in renewable energy, and expressed hope for stronger cooperation in decarbonization efforts and attracting further Japanese investment.
